The purpose of this Blog is to give a forum first for the friends who went on the Turkey trip. Those were: Dina Alsowayel and her husband Tony Chase,Moien Butt, James Calaway, Can Dogan and his wife Hulya, Charles and Lily Foster, Abdel Fustok, James Grace, Sonny Jiles, Sally Lehr, Gerald Merfish, Gordon Quan, Cemil Teber, Jay Thomas, Lori Vetter and Zekeriya Baskal Next we wanted a place where as many of the photos as possible could be placed and viewed, ( Dr. John - I am waiting for your CDs!). Finally, we wanted a spot where we could collect thoughts and ideas that we could share. We hope to have Rev. Jimmy Grace's presentation up soon and will be providing other links and resources too. So what do you think? What could we do to make this better. Blog, call or email me. Better yet, if you are down in the Theater District give me a call and we will grab Charles Foster and have some lunch. Hope to hear from you soon.

Welcoming the Stranger

Yesterday, June 22, Steven Kleinberg of Rice University gave an outstanding talk on the background of US immigration from 1492 to 2008 at Christ Church Cathedral as the context for a discussion that will continue this evening, June 23 through Wednesday, June 25. I found it to be among the best talks I've heard Dr. Kleinberg ever give, perhaps because it was focused on one topic, immigration, rather than all of the topics covered in his 27 years of the Houston Survey.

Because this topic seems so relevant for those of us who just returned from Turkey, where we were surely strangers but were very welcomed by our Turkish hosts, I am posting the details of the other three days in case you might be interested. Our own Gordon Quan will be the speaker on Tuesday, June 24.

Christ Church Cathedral is at 1117 Texas Avenue, which is between the Alley Theatre and the Minute Maid Park. Parking is around the corner, across San Jacinto St. at the parking garage and is free. Supper may be purchased at 5:30 p.m. and the programs starts at 6:30 p.m. Daycare is provided for the children under 4 and there is a program for older children.

Welcoming the Stranger - Vacation Bible School

This series based on Christian reflections on immigration issues kicks off on Sunday, June 22 during the 10 o'clock hour with Rice University sociologist and demographer Stephen Klineberg.

Following is the schedule for Monday - Wednesday, June 23, 24, 25

Monday, June 23
Professor Ray Pickett from the Episcopal and Lutheran seminaries of Austin offers a Christian perspective on the issue of immigration.

Tuesday, June 24
Our Borders, God's Borders - Immigration Lawyer and former City Council member, Gordon Quan and several immigrants look at the experiences of "the stranger" first hand.

Wednesday, June 25
Dean Reynolds helps wrap up by beginning small group discussions of what we have learned and how it will impact our lives.

For Children: In Search of Stories, Symbols and People of the Bible
Children will go through the doors of the Cathedral to do some scriptural detective work and attempt to solve some of the mysteries of the Bible.

Please call Lisa Puccio, Director of Family Ministry, 713-590-3323 or email: lisap@christchurchcathedra.org for more information.
